Well, as a Dell user, I would have to comment that Dell is not very spectacular on performance, and price is the main selling point of them. Their customer service is pretty adequate, though.

I know nothing about PC notebook. However, talking about DVD ripping (and if you want your end product to be DiVX, H.264 etc, not another DVD), nothing simplier than Handbrake.

Dell vs Apple? Hehe, haven't heard that before XD, maybe you want to tell me about it, because that's not what I've heard...

For some reason, Dells are quite slow at ruuning programs as well, although I didn't know if there's something wrong with Dells in general or just that computers...

Hi I am a stranger to you.
If you don't mind the look, IBM and Dell would be a good choice. Both of the companies have excellent world wide after-sell services.

If you would like to have a desktop replacement
IBM ThinkPad T43 HK$12,688 or Dell Inspiron 6000 HK$6,099

otherwise
IBM ThinkPas X41 HK$13,988 or Dell Inspiron 700m HK$6,299

On the other hand, if you can find those shops which does student deals (it's coming to august, so they will still have them), then they will most likely sell NEC laptops at below $10000, maybe you want to have a look at those as well.

One finaly note: no Samsung, or you will regret it, it's as fragile as a little goldfish.

My laptop/notebook is Fujitsu S series, small, light, good looking and powerful, but also quite expensive ($14000) and it's already an older model...I used my profit made from HSBC to buy it.

If you just want a cheap notebook, then don't look at brands, if you want branded ones, then don't look at the price, the two are mutually contradicting...

Anyway, if that PC notebook only ever stays at home, then I will suggest buying a PC instead: It's SO SO much cheaper to get some guy in mongkok to build you one then to buy a notebook; however, if your sister is thinking about moving it around, then you may have to look for branded but older models (like I did), which is obviously cheaper, I believe that old IBM models are quite cheap (and ugly). Expect $10000 - $15000 even for back models.
