I saw the WWDC 2005 Chatcast last night, Apple really is going to use Intel CPUs in Macintosh boxes. I’m Stunned.
I can only think that Apple have completely given up on the G5 as a viable component in a small computer like a notebook or a Mini, and have been forced to look elsewhere. Perhaps Intel has a roadmap of processor upgrades that extends substantially into the future. And let’s not forget that Apple have been bitten by that before.
I think Intel gives Apple:
1. Considerably improved performance
2. Considerably reduced power consumption
3. Considerably reduced cost
The more I consider Macs with an Intel core, the less I think it will matter because as Gabriel says, the individual hardware components are less important to the Macintosh nowadays than the OS. Mac OS is what makes a Mac a Mac.
Well, just as long as we don’t get floppy drives back!

Haha! Hilarious! I have to admit that I was depressed at first, How am I gonna face all those PC nerds I’ve been flaming for years? But then, think of the bright side: Hmmmm, maybe 3.7 Ghz isn’t so bad after all!

At first, I thought, “Okay, so Intel is going to be making G5 chips for Apple now.” Then, after watching Steve Job’s keynote, I thought, “Wait a minute. You mean we’re going to be using OSX on Pentiums?” I feel like I’m in “bizarro world.” I’m sure it will turn out okay, but I still feel a little sad.

我覺得轉用 Intel CPU 後，第一個最顯著的得益就是 Powerbook（不知以後還會不會叫 Powerbook
），之前可供 Notebook 使用的 PowerPC G5 一直到不能面世，如果換了 Centrino (Sonoma) 等 CPU，無論在效能，熱量產生，耗電量方面都會有所改善。

I can’t conclude the efficiency thing. If the future Intel chip is a customized RISC cpu, I will be convinced that Macs will still have stunting graphic capability (together with great display card). If it is a CISC like Pentium IV that SJ used for demo, it will be a little, just a little, nightmare for graphic people and SJ can’t give us a benchmark like “Pentium IV based Mac give 232309 gigaflops of performance in photoshop filter”. As a matter of fact, SJ hadn’t give us a demo of iMovie/GarangeBand or their highend software like DVD studio, FCP and FCE. But it is nothing special for heavy Safari/TextEdit/SPSS user like me as it can be effectively done on a G3 or Pentium II.
